जब 432 ई0पू0 में पोटिडिया के युद्व में आल्र्सविडाय घायल हुआ तो एथेन्स कि सुना के एक सैनिक ने उसे बचा लिया था। उस सैनिक का नाम था सुकरात
बाद में सुकरात का सबसे विवादस्पद व्यक्ति बना। उसी के शब्दो में वह एक ऐसा हौवा बन गया जिसके कारण बडे-बडे अधिकारी सजग हो जाते थ्ेा और वह उनकी आलोचना कर देता था। जब भी कोई बात स्पष्ट न होती दंभ,अन्याय,हेकडी,या लालच का बोलबाला होता सुकरात तुरंत उसमें दखल देता। वह अपने समय का महान नेता था। ऐसे समय में वह जनता से ही पूछता था कि क्या करना चाहिये। वह चाहता था कि जनता स्वयं निर्णय करे। वह लोगो को अपने आप को समझने में सहायता करता था।
सामान्यता ऐसा व्यक्ति कुछ कि तो मदद करता है लेकिन कुछ दूसरो को नाराज कर लेता था। उसके शत्राुओं ने उस पर युवा वर्ग को भ्रष्ट करने तथा मान्य देवताओं कि भक्ति न करने कि प्रेरणा देने का आरोप लगाया। 500 व्यक्तियों कि न्याय सभा में से 280 ने उसे मृत्यु दंड देने के पक्ष में तथा 220 ने विपक्ष में अपना मत दिया।
ऐथेन्स के नियमों के अनुसार सजायाफता व्यक्ति जुर्माना या देशनिकाले में एक चीज चुन सकता था। जब सुकरात ने दोनो बातों को अस्वीकार करके मृत्यु का वरण करना उचित समझा तो उसके मित्रों को बहुत निराशा हुई जेल मंे अन्तिम दिन उसके शिष्य कीटों ने उसे भाग जाने के लिये कहा कीटो ने कि वह और अन्य मित्र तुम्हारे भाग जाने के लिये जेलर को कुछ घूस दे देगे। एथेन्स में न सही अन्य स्थानो के लोग आपसे प्यार करेगें। कीटो ने सुकरात को मनाने की कोशिश की। जब उसकी एक न चली तो उसने सुकरात से युवकों कि शिक्षा पूरी न करने कि बात कही।
सुकरात ने अपने सिद्वांतो से विचलित होना अस्वीकार कर दिया। उसने कहा केवल जीवन जीने का नही ,बल्कि ,अच्छे जीवन का ही मूल्य है। सुकरातने कहा कि वह जीवित रह सकता है और विदेश में जाकर रह सकता है परन्तु न्याय और गुणों युक्त उन सिद्वांतों का क्या होगा जिन्हें वह अब तक अन्य लोगों को बताते आया हूॅ।
सुकरात अन्र्तरात्मा कि आवाज पर विश्वास करता था इसी आधार पर उसने अन्तिम निर्णय भी लिया। अन्तर्रात्मा कि आवाज ने उससे कहा सुकरातसुनो पहले जीवन और बच्चों कि और बाद में न्याय कि मत सोचो वल्कि न्याय सबसे पहले है। अब तुम निर्दोष के रूप में जा रहे हो एक पापी के समान नहीं
जैसे ही सूर्यास्त का समय हुआ जेलर ने उसे हलाहल विष का प्याला दिया। वह बोला...... सुकरात यहां जितने भी आदमी है उनमें से तुुम सबसे ईमानदार और भद्र तथा सबसे अच्छे हो अलविदा.....वह फूट-फूट कर रोते हुए वहां से चला गया। उस समय फांसी फंदे में लटका कर नहींजहर देकर मौत देते थे। सुकरात ने जहर पिया वह तब तक टहलता रहा जब तक विष के प्रभाव से पांव में चलने कि शक्ति नहीे रही और जहर फैलने लगा। जब वह मृत्यु कि प्रतीक्षा में लेट गया तो उसे याद आया कि उसने अपने एक मित्र को मुर्गे का कर्ज चुकाना है।
वह एथेन्स का सबसे बुद्विमान और श्रेष्ठ व्यक्ति था। उसका अन्त इतिहास के एक क्षणमात्र कि घटना है परन्तु उसकी विश्वसनीयता युगों-युगों तक स्मरणीय रहेगी।

A strange incident

According to the rules of Athens, a convicted person could choose a fine or a fine. As the sunset approached, the jailer gave him a cup of halal poison. He said…. Socrates, of all the men here, you are the most honest and gentle and best of all. Goodbye… He went from there crying bitterly. At that time, hanging did not hang in a noose and gave death. Socrates drank the poison, he kept walking until the power of the poison could not walk in his feet and the poison started spreading. When he lay in wait for death, he remembered that he had to pay a chicken loan to one of his friends.
He was the most intelligent and superior person of Athens. His end is a momentary event in history, but his credibility will be remembered for ages.
